On May 11th, two CSRA-SFPE chapter officers, Rob Plonski (Vice President) and Rob Hanson (Secretary), volunteered to participate at an event called STEM Fest. Located at Paul Knox middle school, this teach-in was to encourage middle school students to consider a future career science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. CSRA-SFPE had a display table promoting fire protection engineering. Throughout the 3-hour event, over 500 students were exposed to a 5-minute overview of fire protection engineering through thought-provoking questions and exciting experiments. As part of this presentation, fundamentals of combustion, flame propagation, extinguishment principals, and general fire safety were explored. Students of all backgrounds left with newfound knowledge of the four components required for a fire to occur (heat, fuel, oxygen, and chemical reaction) and the fundamental understanding that removal of any one of the four is sufficient enough to extinguish a fire.

Indian Waters Council conducted their 23rd annual Merit Badge University. The event allows 400 Scouts from the Columbia Midlands area to earn a merit badge in one day. This year, two of our chapter members taught classes on careers in the fire service. Patrick Bradshaw taught Fire Safety, where 15 Scouts spoke with an Engineer who introduced them to a career in Fire Protection Engineering. Paul Anslow taught Engineering Merit Badge and also exposed 20 Scouts to a career in Fire Protection Engineering. The Scouts asked a host of questions and several said they would consider a career in Fire Protection Engineering.

Twelve members from the chapter as well as the firefighters from the Beaufort Fire Department showed up to start the installation of the CAPA House sprinkler system. Everyone was excited and Channel 11 From Savannah did a brief segment on our work.
As with all project, we hit a few snags, but we regrouped quickly to revise the plans as needed and start our installation. We greatly appreciate the Beaufort Fire Department for providing lunch—no one went hungry!

Joint Meeting with ASCE Columbia Chapter

The CSRA Chapter had a joint meeting with the Columbia ASCE Chapter on December 17, 2014 at the Brookland Baptist Church’s Conference Center.

Ralph Foster made a presentation about fire protection underground piping. The presentation detailed the requirements in NFPA 24, Fire Sprinkler Specification Sheets of underground piping, and the requirements of the State Fire Marshal’s Office of plan review.

Civil engineers frequently get pulled in to the plan review process when a utility contractor installed the underground fire protection piping as allowed by the Sprinkler Act. Utility contractors don’t generate shop drawings but install the piping based on the engineer’s drawings for the project. Making the engineer’s drawings the only drawing for the SFM to review.

The presentation was well received. One attendee said “This was the most complete and concise presentation on fire protection systems he had seen!”

Ralph Foster taught his second class this year for the Florence area code officials on reviewing sprinkler shop drawings. The 6 hour class covers basic topics from how to use an Architectural Scale, to reading shop drawings and reviewing hydraulic calculations. The class is a mixture of lecture and hands on review of actual shop drawings, hydraulic calculations and seismic bracing calculations.

The class is provided free of charge to the local officials. Ralph said, “I know AHJs have very small training budgets and I want to give back to the folks who helped me while I was working with the State Fire Marshal’s Office."

The CSRA chapter had 2 members teaching classes about fire protection for the Indian Waters Council of the Boy Scouts of America March 29, 2014 at USC’s Swearingen Engineering Center in Columbia, SC.

Patrick Bradshaw taught Fire Safety merit badge which teaches scouts about fire prevention at home and away from their homes. The class also presented fire service careers that scouts may pursue when they are older including Fire Protection Engineering.

Paul Anslow taught Engineering merit badge which teaches scouts about engineering and career opportunities available to them. Paul said “Fire Protection Engineering is an easy sale to the scouts considering the demand for new Fire Protection Engineers, the starting salary, and the travel opportunities available.”

Between Patrick and Paul - 50 scouts learned about careers available to them in Fire Protection Engineering.

Silver Bluff Fire Department Sprinkler Project

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers actively promotes the installation of residential sprinkler systems as a means of saving lives. Fire is one of the leading causes of death in the home. The CSRA Chapter has taken this initiative a step further by installing residential sprinkler systems in Habitat homes in Aiken, Columbia, and Georgetown, SC. The chapter has been able to do this by partnering with industry manufacturers to provide materials for the system with the chapter furnishing the design and the labor. The installation of a residential sprinkler system at the Silver Bluff Volunteer Fire Department is latest in that effort. This installation will ensure the safety of firefighters sleeping in the station. Also, it provides the fire department with a system which can be seen by the public and it will serve to disprove much of the negative information out there concerning sprinkler systems.

Christ Central’s Hope & Trinity Centers in Graniteville, SC

CSRA SFPE members reached out to the community to assist in the restoration and renovation of Christ Central's Hope and Trinity Centers in Graniteville, SC. These buildings were two of many affected by the 2005 Norfolk Southern train wreck which resulted in the release of 60 tons of chlorine gas and caused 9 deaths, 250+ injuries, and extensive damage to nearby buildings. Volunteers Jason Butler, Eric Johnson, Mark Legrand, and Gene Roe worked to provide code analysis, install emergency lights, exit signs, electrical feeds, smoke detectors, and improve drainage around the buildings. The Hope and Trinity Centers will be used for community outreach programs such as free advanced culinary training, a free GED program, a medical clinic, daycare, etc. While much progress has been made, there is still plenty of work to be done. Contact Eric Johnson if you are interested in helping.
